The GHI awards short-term fellowships to German and American doctoral students as well as post-doctoral scholars in the fields of German history, the history of German-American relations, and the history of the role of Germany and the USA in international relations. These fellowships are also available to German doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars/Habilitanden in the field of American history. The fellowships are usually granted for periods of one to six months but, depending on the funds available, can be extended by one or more months. The research projects must draw upon primary sources located in the United States.
The GHI will not provide funding for preliminary research, manuscript composition or the revision of manuscripts. It will give clear priority to those post-doc projects that are designed for the “second book”. The monthly stipend is approximately € 1,600 for doctoral students and € 2,800 for post-doctoral scholars. In addition, fellowship recipients based in Germany will receive reimbursement for their roundtrip airfare to the U.S. All fellowship recipients are required to present the results of their research at the GHI during their grant period.
The next deadline for applications is May 20, 2008. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of academic degree, project description (3,000 words), research schedule for the fellowship period, and at least one letter of reference. While applicants may write in either English or German, we recommend that they use the language in which they are most proficient. They will be notified about the outcome within approximately two months after the deadline. Please send applications to:
