Die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften sind kultur- und sprachgebunden. Sprache und Kultur sind ihr Gegenstand und ihr Medium. Um den Austausch und die Netzwerkbildung zwischen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftlern aus Deutschland, Frankreich und Italien nachhaltig zu fördern und dabei den Gebrauch von Deutsch, Französisch und Italienisch als Wissenschaftssprachen ausdrücklich zu unterstützen, haben die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), die Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) und die Villa Vigoni das Programm Trilaterale Forschungskonferenzen entwickelt, in dem Mehrsprachigkeit ein tragendes Prinzip ist.
Bewilligt wird eine Trilaterale Forschungskonferenz auf der Grundlage eines Antrages, der die Thematik, die Zielsetzung, die Methodik, das beabsichtigte Arbeitsprogramm und die vorgesehenen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer vorstellt. Antragstellung und Koordination übernehmen je ein/e Wissenschaftler/in aus Deutschland, Frankreich und Italien.
Jede Trilaterale Forschungskonferenz besteht aus einer Serie von drei Veranstaltungen, die möglichst im Jahresrhythmus aufeinanderfolgen.
Alle drei Treffen finden in der Villa Vigoni statt. Vorgeschlagen werden können Projekte aus allen Bereichen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften. Die Teilnehmer einer Forschungskonferenz bestehen aus einer Kerngruppe von bis zu 15 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus den drei beteiligten Ländern. Diese Gruppe bleibt während aller Treffen gleich.

Social sciences and humanities are inextricably linked to culture and language, which are both their object and their medium. With the aim of strengthening the dialogue and the formation of networks among German, French and Italian researchers in the field of humanities and social sciences over the long term, and of fostering the use of the German, the French and the Italian language in research, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme and Villa Vigoni have developed the program “Trilateral Research Conferences”, in which multilingualism plays a fundamental role.
A trilateral research conference is approved on the basis of an application which includes the subject, the purpose, the methodology, the work program and the expected participants. Three researchers, one from each of the participating countries, are responsible for the application and coordination of the project.
Every trilateral project consists of three conferences, preferably held on an annual basis, which take place in the Villa Vigoni. The program is open to projects concerning every subject in the field of humanities and social sciences. The participants of a trilateral conference are researchers coming from the three involved countries and their number is limited to 15. The research team remains the same all over the three conferences.

Le scienze umane e sociali sono indissolubilmente legate alla cultura e alla lingua. Lingua e cultura ne sono, allo stesso tempo, oggetto e medium. Per rafforzare in modo duraturo il confronto e la formazione di reti fra ricercatori provenienti da Germania, Francia e Italia, nel campo delle scienze umane e sociali e con il fine esplicito di sostenere l’uso del tedesco, del francese e dell’italiano come lingue di ricerca, la Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), la Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) e Villa Vigoni hanno sviluppato il programma delle Conferenze di ricerca trilaterali, in cui il plurilinguismo rappresenta un principio fondamentale.
Una conferenza di ricerca trilaterale viene approvata a seguito di una domanda in cui vengano esposti tematica, finalità, metodologia, programma di lavoro e partecipanti previsti. Tre studiosi, provenienti rispettivamente da Germania, Francia e Italia, sono responsabili della domanda e del coordinamento.
Ogni conferenza trilaterale consta di tre incontri che hanno luogo, possibilmente, con cadenza annuale. Tutti e tre gli incontri si svolgono a Villa Vigoni. È possibile proporre progetti in tutti i campi delle scienze umane e sociali. I partecipanti di una conferenza di ricerca sono raggruppati in un nucleo di massimo 15 studiosi provenienti dai tre paesi. La composizione di questo nucleo di partecipanti rimane costante per le tre manifestazioni.
