AHRC Studentship opportunities in the Division of History and Politics, University of Stirling

The University of Stirling is now taking applications for funded PhD studentships in History, Politics, Heritage and Archaeology through the Scottish AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership. Since the University’s foundation, it has produced internationally excellent and world-leading research. The Division of History and Politics is at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary research characterised by a number of distinctive themes including environmental history, heritage studies, contemporary history and politics, conflict and cooperation, Scottish history and Atlantic studies.

We welcome enquiries from students wishing to undertake research relating to any of our specialisms, but we especially encourage applications in the following fields:

- Environmental history
- Heritage studies and archaeology
- Political activism and social movements from the eighteenth century to the present
- Scottish history in a European context
- American and Atlantic Studies
- African history
- Spanish and Portuguese history

We also welcome students who wish to combine our areas of expertise with those in other disciplines. We are the home to two leading research centres: The Centre for Environment, Heritage and Policy (https://www.stir.ac.uk/cehp/) and the Centre for Policy, Conflict and Co-Operation Research (https://www.stir.ac.uk/arts-humanities/research/centres/cpccr/).

These provide an important framework for many of our PhD students, pooling the expertise of academic staff in History and Politics together with those in Law, Social Sciences, and Biological and Environmental Sciences.

The AHRC DTP Scotland comprises eight higher education institutions working together with a prestigious range of local, regional & national arts, culture, heritage & other organisations to deliver world-class doctoral training in the arts & humanities. Each year the Scottish AHRC DTP offers more than 50 AHRC-studentships.

Award Details: The AHRC DTP studentships cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend of around £14,000. In addition, the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities also offers an innovative programme of professional training for PhD students that profits from strong links between the participating institutions and genuine interdisciplinarity.

Postgraduate research students at the University of Stirling will work in a supportive, and interdisciplinary environment in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. They will be part of a thriving research culture and have the opportunity to present their ideas regularly to internal and external audiences. Our postgraduates are active partners in shaping their own training and development supported by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities training programme and the Stirling Graduate School.
