The Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies of the University of Erfurt announces an opening for a temporary position for six years as

Full Professor (W2) for History of Religion in East Asia (Japan, China, Korea) or India (code number: 26/2008)

beginning October 2008 at the earliest. The position is part of an interdisciplinary research project “Religious individualization in historical perspective”; the holder will closely cooperate with scholars of Ancient, Early Modern and Modern History of Religion in Europe, philosophers, and sociologists. The six-year-contract might be considerably prolonged. More information is available on our website: www.uni-erfurt.de/maxwe.

We will consider candidates from a wide variety of disciplinary expertise and period specializations in the field of East Asian and Indian studies, with a primary focus on religion. We seek to appoint a scholar who combines larger historical perspectives with a rigorous understanding of primary materials and historical contexts. Applicants should possess a high level of proficiency in relevant languages and have a reading knowledge of German (teaching might be in English). Evidence of excellent research abilities is essential. Habilitation or the publication of a second book is required.

The successful candidate will be part of the nucleus of the research group within our Institute for Advanced Studies, supervise doctoral dissertations, and participate actively in programs in other faculties. Residency in Erfurt is required.

Please send applications (including a draft of a research project, CV, copies of degrees, and names of suggested reviewers) to Max Weber Center, Director: Prof. Dr. Hans Joas, University of Erfurt, Am Hügel 1, 99084 Erfurt, Germany.
