Full-time Post-doc position

at the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences on „Multiple Secularities – Beyond the West, Beyond Modernities“ at Leipzig University

The Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Kolleg-Forschergruppe, KFG) on „Multiple Secularities – Beyond the West, Beyond Modernities“ is a research unit at Leipzig University, funded by the German Research Council (DFG).

We are investigating forms of distinction and arrangements of differentiation between religious and other social spheres, practices, interpretive frameworks, institutions and discourses in different eras and regions. To such arrangements, which are often contentious, we refer with the heuristic term “secularities”. Based on the hypothesis that drawing boundaries between the religious and the non-religious is not an exclusive sign either of modernity or of the “West”, we explore corresponding emic taxonomies, forms of social dif-ferentiation and modes of demarcation.

We are looking for a sociologist/social scientist for a full-time post-doctoral position (E 13) for 2 years (for technical reasons the contract will be 1+1 year), from 4/2018 to 3/2020. If funding of the Centre for another 4 years will be granted (2020-2024), an extension of the position is possible. Applicants should fulfill the following requirements:

(a) Research experience in the Sociology of Religion and Secularity;
(b) Training, if possible research experience in Historical Sociology;
(c) Training, if possible research experience in one non-Western region.

The researcher has to be present in Leipzig and be willing to work with a group of scholars from Leipzig as well as with international fellows on the topic of the center. A specific focus will be on the question of path dependencies and global entanglements in paths of secularity, on the societal constella-tions/reference problems to which such developments are related, and on the guiding ideas with which they are legitimized. Therefore, we are looking for a person who is interested in addressing theoretical questions and able to relate them to historical developments. English is the primary language of communi-cation at the Centre.

Persons, who are interested, please send their CV, publication list and a letter of intent until 10 January 2018 as one pdf-file to:
