Key responsibilities
The successful applicant for this post:
- Plays a leading role in (re)developing the research programme Political Culture and National Identity;
- Uses her/his wide-ranging research experience to (co-)supervise doctoral research across the field of European history;
- Teaches students in the BA and MA programmes in History, and in the doctoral programme. A tertiary teaching qualification (BKO or equivalent) is expected;
- Develops ambitious research projects, writes national and international grant proposals, and support colleagues in developing theirs;
- Plays an active, engaged, and integrating role in the General History section of the LUIH;
- Has a management responsibility for part of the staff in the section;
- Is willing and able to undertake administrative, managerial and governance tasks in the institute, the faculty and the university;
- Has an excellent command of English, as well as some other European languages. If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, she/he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years, so as to be able to teach in the BA. The administrative language of Leiden University is Dutch;
- Is willing and able to be present in Leiden throughout the academic year.
Selection criteria
- You are a historian of international repute (F/M), with an excellent track record of research and publication regarding the history of twentieth-century Europe, preferably post 1945;
- Wide-ranging expertise in cultural, political or socio-political history. Preference may be given to applicants with (comparative) research experience in different European countries, and a global perspective;
- Experienced, committed and inspiring academic teacher, with clear ideas on teaching methods and curriculum development
- A team player with a demonstrable interest and experience in academic leadership, administration and governance
- Experience and success in obtaining research funding, and in helping others to do so.
- A scholar with an extensive international academic network and collaborations

The Institute for History is one of the seven Research Institutes of the Faculty of Humanities. The BA in History attracts around 250 new students every year, the MA and ResMA around 150. We have around 50 Ph.D candidates with full funding. Its central research mission is to study ‘Global questions’, through the study of ‘local sources’ (https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/humanities/institute-for-history/research). The institute was ranked #19 in the 2016 QS World University Rankings. In the last decade or so, our staff has been very successful in attracting new research funding and new students, and the Institute is growing fast. Terms and conditions
The position is to be taken up on September 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. If the successful candidate has already held a full professorship or if she/he has successfully completed a tenure track, she/he may be eligible for a permanent, fulltime appointment. In other cases the appointment will initially be for a period of five years, convertible into a permanent position in case of satisfactory performance. The gross monthly salary will be between € 5,260.- € 7,659.- commensurate with qualifications and experience. These amounts are based on a fulltime appointment and are in conformity with current salary scale H2 under the collective employment agreement (cao) for Dutch Universities.
An appointment at Leiden University includes pension build-up and other benefits, including an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. After appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the successful applicant will be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs), successful completion of which is a condition for favorable assessment in work reviews.
If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, she/he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years from taking up duty, for teaching, administrative and social purposes; the University will fund his/her Dutch training at the University’s Academic Language Center.
