Job description

You contribute to teaching and research in the interdisciplinary field of contemporary European history. Your teaching duties include courses in the BA and MA programs of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) and in the University College Maastricht (UCM). While your teaching activities will take 70% of your time, research will be 30% of your employment time. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.

Requirements

The candidate has a PhD degree in History.
The candidate should be capable of triggering student learning and participation in group discussions. (S)he is an inspiring and stimulating supervisor. As the language of instruction is English, your command of English (oral and writing) should be excellent. Previous experience in working with innovative, interdisciplinary learning approaches and problem-based teaching methods are highly welcomed. Experience with teaching international classrooms would be preferable. All members of staff are expected to share our emphasis on high quality teaching, reflected in our system of small-scale problem based learning.
Your research experience and publications demonstrate your interest in interdisciplinary work. You have published internationally in peer-reviewed journals, or are willing to develop in this direction. You have evidence of or potential for international excellence in published research.

Your previous research and/or teaching focuses on contemporary political history. Regionally, your work is on Central Europe (excluding Germany) and/or Southeast Europe.
You are a team player.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has a staff of about 250, and over 1,800 students. All programmes are offered in English. Students come from all over the world. FASoS offers two 3-year Bachelor programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, eight different 1-year Master programmes and two 2-year research Master programmes. Its Graduate School takes in around 10 PhD students each year. Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Maastricht University Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in several recently renovated 18th-century buildings in the historic city centre of Maastricht.

What we have to offer

We offer an 0.80 fte appointment as Lecturer for two years. Depending on the number of students and on your performance there might be the perspective of prolongation. Your workload will be the normal workload for the position of Lecturer (Docent 3). Currently this implies 70% teaching activities en 30% research activities.

Depending on experience and qualification, the gross monthly salary is about € 3.037,00 per month, scale level 10 (based on a full-time appointment). Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

After a positive assessment a promotion to scale 11 is possible in the 2nd year.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing.

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.

You will be provided with shared office space and a PC.

Starting date: Preferably 15 August 2015
