The Institute of North American Studies at King’s College London is accepting applications now for places in a new one-year taught Masters programme on “America and the World”. Inspired by the “transnational turn” undertaken in recent years by scholars of American history, literature, culture, and politics, the programme aims to understand the United States less as an isolated, exceptional society than as an important nexus in global exchanges of people, products, art, and ideas.

Degree Structure:

In two core courses, students will read recent research on the trans-Atlantic origins of American political thought and American literature, inter-American histories of racial discrimination and immigration, and the contemporary United States’ economic, military, and cultural influence throughout the world, while learning cutting-edge interdisciplinary research methods and exploring London’s rich collections of primary source materials. They will also have the opportunity to pursue more focussed interests in a diverse set of optional modules offered by King’s Global Institutes, taught by experts on the United States, Brazil, Russia, China, India, Africa, and the Middle East. Finally, each student will conduct an original research project and write a dissertation under close individual supervision, and in an environment designed to encourage collaboration.
