Five doctoral candidate positions in
the humanities and social sciences at
the Baltic and East European Graduate School, Södertörn University College

The Baltic and East European Graduate School (Beegs) is located at the Flemingsberg campus of Södertörns högskola (University College), Stockholm, Sweden.
The focus of the research activities of Beegs is on the Baltic and East European area.
BEEGS is part of the Center for Baltic and East European Studies, which coordinates Baltic and East European research at the University College, organizes conferences and seminars and invites guest researchers.
All doctoral students will have a four year full-time employed doctoral position. Initial salary for each month is 17.800 Swedish crowns. This amount increases with annual increments up to 19.800 per month in the final year. Candidates can do paid teaching or administrative work up to a maximum of 20% of fulltime. In such cases the length of study can be extended to five years.
The employment will start February 1, 2006.
The Graduate School is a cooperative venture between Södertörns högskola and the University of Stockholm and other Swedish universities. It is financed by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies.
The University College lays special emphasis on studies concerning such themes as Democracy and Welfare; Culture, Ethnicity and National identity; Internationalization and the Organization of Society; Society and Ecosystems, Educational science and Civic education.
This year we welcome applications in Archaeology, Ethnology, Philosophy, Business Administration, History, Literature, Media and Communication Studies, Economics, Sociology and Political Science.

The application must include three copies of:
1. A completed and signed application form.
2. A statement of your intended graduate research plan, 3-5 pages in English.
3. Certified transcripts in English or Swedish of previous undergraduate and graduate studies, with grade-point averages.
4. Your Curriculum Vitae.
5. Your Master’s thesis (C+D-essay in Sweden/equiv. of Honours thesis) and other relevant scientific publications.
Applications which do not contain all information requested or which are not submitted in three complete copies will be disregarded. Also, applications received after closing date will be disregarded.
Please note that one complete copy of the application will be filed at Södertörns högskola (University college) for two years, due to instructions from the National Archive.

What is BEEGS specific research area?
The graduate school was created in order to bridge a perceived gap of knowledge between the Scandinavian countries and countries and cultures around the Baltic Sea and its environment.
The school serves to re-integrate the experience of these countries and cultures into the corpus of humanities and social sciences.

How do I apply to BEEGS?
Your application should include three copies of:

2. Your statement of intended graduate research plan, 3-5 pages in English. The research plan should include theories, methods, intended empirical material and the aim of your dissertation. Write in any style applicable to your discipline.
3. Certified transcripts in English or Swedish of previous undergraduate and graduate studies, with grade point averages. If you have exams from other universities than Swedish you can contact national Agency for Higher Education for translation wwweng.hsv.se
4. Your Curriculum Vitae.
5. Your Master’s thesis (C, D-essay in Sweden) and other relevant scientific publications. If you have written your thesis in another language than Swedish or English please include three copies of an English summary in at least five pages. You must also include your thesis in original.
Applications will be divided up among sub-committees according to subjects.
These will make preliminary rankings. Decisions from the Graduate School will be posted approximately six months after application deadline.
Do you require letter of recommendation?
No we do not require a letter of recommendation. But you are free to enclose any documents you feel will strengthen your application.

What shall I do if I have written my thesis in another language than English or Swedish?
If you have written your thesis in another language than Swedish or English please include three copies of an English summary in at least five pages. You must also include your thesis in original.
What exam do you require from applicants?
Since competition is strong Södertörns högskola (University/College) recommends that applicants should have a Masters degree. The chances to get a PhD position without a MA is insignificant.
How do I finance my PhD studies?
You do not need a grant or stipend if you are accepted to BEEGS. You will have an employment from the first day.

Who can apply? Am I too old? Are there regional restrictions? Can I be overqualified?
Anyone regardless of citizenship, age etc can apply.
However if you already have a PhD or have done substantial part of your PhD training you will most probably not be accepted. Priority is given to students not yet accepted as doctoral students.
How do I submit my application?

You cannot send in your application by any other means than regular mail on paper.
What happens after I have submitted my application?
When the registrar has received your application you will be noticed.

Deadline for application is the date the application must have reached the registrar office. ( Not the post stamp)
Do you accept supplements after deadline?
Yes you have the possibility to send supplements. The deadline for supplements will be in the beginning of June 2005. We do not accept any supplements after this deadline.
When will I receive the decision?
Decisions from the Graduate School will be posted approximately six months after application deadline. Until then we can give no information.
When will employment start?
The employment will start February 1, 2006.
Does BEEGS have undergraduate studies?
