The department of History, Archaeology and Area Studies has a vacancy for a Professor of Modern History for 38 hours per week vacancy number W12-132.
The Chair of Modern History covers the entire area of western history from c. 1800 to the present, including its relations with the non-western world. The successful candidate is a specialist on transnational and global history and has developed a challenging and coherent view of the history of the interaction between (parts of) the western and the non-western world, apparent from publications in top-rated international publications. The successful candidate easily crosses borders between various academic disciplines, and has proven competencies in academic leadership.
Requirements
Candidates for the position are expected to meet the following requirements:
- a PhD in modern history;
- an international reputation in modern history;
- the ability to establish productive connections with other academic disciplines within as well as outside the department;
- research matching one of the Faculty’s research priority areas;
- an excellent publication record;
- an extensive international network;
- an experienced and enthusiastic teacher;
- experience in developing new teaching programs;
- a proven track record of acquiring external research funding;
- proven management capacities.

Appointment
The appointment will be permanent, after a period of two years on temporary basis and satisfactory performance. The gross salary will normally conform to professorial scale 2, between €4,904 and €7,142 gross per month (€ 68.459 - € 99.702 per annum, including 8% holiday pay and an 8,3% end of year payment) on a full-time basis in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). In certain cases, however, different terms of employment may be offered.
