JOB DESCRIPTION
PROFESSOR OF NORTH AMERICAN HISTORY

The Sciences Po Department of History invites applications for a position of Full Professor (Professeur des Universités - public sector employment) of North American History.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING PROFILE
The applicant’s research should deal with one or several aspects of 19th or 20th century North American history (political, social, economic, or cultural history, history of foreign policy, etc.). In keeping with Sciences Po’s commitment to interdisciplinary research, the History Department is seeking a historian whose work opens up to other disciplines (political science, sociology, law, anthropology, etc.).

Applicants, of whatever nationality, must have considerable international experience in their research and teaching activities. Mastery of English and French is essential. The ability to develop joint research and teaching activities with American and international partners, as well as the capacity to identify sources of research funding for Master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral students, represent valuable assets. Teaching experience at universities abroad, especially in North America, is also particularly appreciated.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH
The successful applicant will teach as a member of the History Department, offering courses in the undergraduate colleges of the Sciences Po Paris and Reims campuses, as well as actively participating in the training of research students and the supervision of doctoral theses. The successful applicant will pursue his or her research as part of either the Centre for History at Sciences Po (chsp.sciences-po.fr/) or the Centre for International Studies and Research (www.ceri-sciencespo.com).

The position will be officially published in September 2012. Recruitment will proceed according to the standard public sector procedure for hiring professors. Candidates who are not French or who have received their credentials outside of France and who have not been qualified by the National Council of Universities (CNU) must obtain approval from the Research Committee of Sciences Po in order to determine their eligibility for the position. L’emploi proposé par le Département d’Histoire de Sciences Po est un poste de professeur des Universités (emploi public).

PROFIL DE RECHERCHE ET D’ENSEIGNEMENT
Les recherches de ce professeur peuvent porter sur l’une ou plusieurs des dimensions de l’histoire nord-américaine au XIXème et/ou au XXème siècle (Histoire politique, sociale, économique, culturelle, histoire de la politique étrangère etc.). Historien, ce professeur doit être ouvert à d’autres disciplines (science politique, sociologie, droit, anthropologie etc.), Sciences Po étant un établissement caractérisé par la pluridisciplinarité.

Ce professeur, français ou étranger, doit avoir une large ouverture internationale dans ses activités de recherche comme d’enseignement. La maîtrise de l’anglais et du français est évidemment impérative. La capacité à animer des coopérations américaines et internationales au profit des chercheurs comme des étudiants, de même que la capacité à chercher des financements pour la recherche, utiles notamment aux étudiants de master, aux doctorants et aux post-doctorants, constitueront un atout supplémentaire. Les expériences d’enseignement dans des Universités étrangères, en priorité nord-américaines, seront valorisées dans cet esprit.

ENSEIGNEMENTS ET RECHERCHE
Le professeur assurera l’essentiel de son enseignement dans le cadre du Département d’Histoire. Il enseignera au sein du Collège universitaire de Sciences Po dans le campus de Paris et dans celui de Reims. Il participera pleinement à la formation des étudiants à la recherche et à l’encadrement des thèses. Ses recherches pourront s’effectuer dans le cadre du Centre d’Histoire de Sciences Po (chsp.sciences-po.fr/) comme du Centre d’études des recherches internationales (www.ceri-sciencespo.com).

Le poste ne sera publié officiellement qu’en septembre 2012. La procédure qui suivra sera celle prévue pour les recrutements d’enseignants-chercheurs sur des emplois publics. Les professeurs non français ou titulaires dans des établissements hors de France qui ne sont pas qualifiés par le Conseil national des Universités (CNU) doivent obtenir la validation du Conseil scientifique de Sciences Po afin de savoir s’ils sont éligibles à cet emploi. Il leur est demandé de se manifester auprès du Département d’Histoire avant le 25 mai 2012 en écrivant au directeur du Département, le professeur Marc Lazar (marc.lazarsciences-po.fr).
