UCL History Department, which is committed to research-led teaching and attracts highly able and motivated students, is seeking a Teaching Fellow to cover undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment, plus the associated administrative and tutorial duties, while a member of staff is away on a research fellowship.
This is a 10 month fixed term appointment from 1 October 2012. Salary Range and Grade: UCL Grade 7 (£35,557-38,594 per annum).
The courses for which the Teaching Fellow will be responsible are as follows:
HIST6307: Enlightenment and Revolution: Europe 1715-1805
This undergraduate survey course provides an introduction to the history of Continental Europe in the eighteenth century with a strong emphasis on contemporary intellectual currents. The course structure consists of 20 weekly lectures and 10 (fortnightly) seminars to up to 4 groups of 15 students. Assessment : 2 essays of 2500 words each and an unseen three hour examination.
HIST7339: The Human and its Others: Enlightenment ideas of ethnicity and race
This specialist undergraduate option examines ideas about human nature and ethnicity in the wake of the discovery of the New World, encounters with unfamiliar cultures, and new scientific and commercial endeavours. The course is taught in 10 2-hour seminars to 15 students (to be taught twice, once in each teaching term). Assessment: 2 essays of 2500 words each.
MA option
An MA option covering the European Enlightenment (to be taught over 20 2 hour seminars with an assessment pattern of 2 essays of 4000 words each). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design this course according to their own research interests, subject to departmental approval.
The postholder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Head of Department.
