MECS Institute for Advanced Study on Media Cultures of Computer Simulation at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany is offering one Junior Fellowship for Ph.D. Candidates. MECS is funded by the DFG German Research Foundation and directed by the heads of the research group, Prof. Dr. Claus Pias and Prof. Dr. Martin Warnke. The fellowship is to start on April 1st, 2015.

In cooperation with national and international fellows from the fields of media studies, history of science, cultural history as well as the natural sciences and engineering, the MECS analyses the extent to which computer simulations have transformed the research practice, academic knowledge and academic understanding of various disciplines and research areas over the past few decades and explores the resulting theoretical and social consequences.

The Fellow programme is the central element of the Institute. It serves as an initiation for a vivid exchange between international researchers. Thematically it addresses an area of research that needs to be harvested in archives, laboratories or literature-oriented case studies.

The research project of the applicant should refer to a relevant topic for MECS and can be chosen freely by the applicants. Neither the topic nor the approach or methodology are predefined. Since the MECS is interdisciplinary, an interest in an exchange with scientists from other disciplines - especially in the media and cultural studies - is expected. In addition, a disposition for making the respective research projects and contexts accessible to non-specialists, and an openness for transdisciplinary discussion, are highly desired.

The MECS is characterized by its presence principle. A presence in Lüneburg during the period of the fellowship is required.
The scholarship is based on the criteria of the DFG. An accommodation is included.

Please send your application, including a descriptive abstract (in German or English) of a research project related to the Institute of Advanced Studies‘ topic, no later than by October 31st, 2014 to:
