The Faculty of Arts is a large, dynamic faculty in the heart of the city of Groningen. It has more than 5000 students and 700 staff members, who are working at the frontiers of knowledge every day. The faculty offers a wide range of degree programmes: 15 Bachelor's programmes and over 35 Master's specializations. Our research, which is internationally widely acclaimed, covers the following fields: Archaeology, Cultural Studies, History, International Relations, Journalism, Language and Literary Studies, and Linguistics.

Job description
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) is looking for a lecturer in Ancient History ( 0.8 fte, 60% teaching, 40% research) on a permanent contract. We are looking for an inspiring all-round lecturer and an excellent and innovative researcher who will complement our current research and teaching activities.
The department of Ancient History has a strong research profile with a focus on cultural, religious and political history from the (later) Classical period to the Later Roman Empire. We welcome applications from all specializations within Ancient History, but we are primarily aiming to strengthen our current profile with expertise in the chronological period between c. 300 BC and the Early Imperial period. Experience with an interdisciplinary approach to Ancient History is a prerequisite. Knowledge of, and experience with, applications of Digital Humanities in teaching and research will be an advantage.
The candidate will conduct research that fits within the research institutes in which Ancient History participates: The research Centre for Historical Studies (http://www.rug.nl/research/icog/research/research-centres/research-centre-for-historical-studies?lang=en); and CRASIS: interdisciplinary studies in culture, religion and society of the ancient world (http://www.rug.nl/research/centre-for-religious-studies/research-institutes/crasis/?lang=en).

We are seeking a candidate who is able to:
- teach a broad range of course units in ancient cross-disciplinary specializations within the BA and MA degree programmes in History, Classics, and in the interdisciplinary Research MA in Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and other relevant programmes (Minors, Honours), as well as supervising BA and MA theses
- conduct research, publish nationally and internationally in suitable academic contexts, as well as initiate and implement national and international research projects
- play an active and stimulating role in the organization of teaching and research, including carrying out administrative duties.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- a PhD in Ancient History
- excellent social and communicative skills, and a collegial attitude in sharing administrative tasks
- a creative and innovative attitude towards teaching and research
- a good command of English
- candidates who do not speak Dutch are expected to Master Dutch within a two-year time span to such a degree that they can take an active part in the organizational and administrative tasks of the department.

In the area of teaching:
- broad experience in teaching Ancient History at various levels (BA/MA)
- the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), or willingness to obtain it within a year
- demonstrable good teaching evaluations
- demonstrable ability to initiate or contribute to the development of new course units and new teaching modes
- willingness to teach and develop courses in a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary context (e.g. Archaeology, Classics, History, Religious Studies).

In the area of research:
- a good publication record
- a developed research profile that falls within the research interests of the department of Ancient History, and that is linked to the research programme of the Centre for Historical Studies
- an excellent research potential (preferably demonstrated by postdoctoral grants, international experience, and an active research agenda)
- international experience and an international network.

In the area of administration and organization:
- the ability make a constructive contribution to interdisciplinary teaching and to the collegial atmosphere in the departments
- demonstrable administrative and organizational skills.

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen is offering a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,259 (scale 11) and € 5,070 (scale 12 of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and an annual bonus of 8.3%. The appointment is a temporary one for a period of two years, with the prospect of appointment for an indefinite period.

Date of entry into employment: 1 January 2015.
