Gender, Power, Religion: Forces in Cultural History

March 29 - April 1, 2001

The German Historical Institute and the Friends of the German Historical Institute are pleased to announce the first annual Young Scholars Forum
from March 29 to April 1, 2001. The forum is designed to bring together American Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. recipients for a weekend of
scholarly discussion and collaboration. Young, promising scholars will have the opportunity to present their work to their peers as well as to
distinguished scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. Participants should be working in the fields of German, German-American, or comparative
history.
The theme for 2001 is: Gender, Power, Religion: Forces in Cultural History. In addressing these themes, the participants' papers should
assess cultural history as an approach, especially in terms of gender relationships, the formation of religious identity, and/or power and
authority in society. Possible topics include concepts of masculinity and femininity, women's history, religious conflict, spirituality, political
culture, regulation and enforcement of norms and laws, and criminality. Papers may cover any period since medieval times.
Successful applicants must be prepared to submit a paper of approximately twenty typewritten pages by February 15, 2001. They also are expected to
serve as a commentator for one other paper in the seminar. The GHI will provide lodging and some meals; travel assistance is available upon
request.

Applications should include the following materials:
1. A curriculum vitae (including address and e-mail)
2. A description of the proposed paper (2 pages, double-spaced)
3. One letter of recommendation
