STIPENDS AVAILABLE FOR INTENSIVE SEMINAR IN AMERICAN HISTORY

"From the Counterculture to Ronald Reagan U.S. Society, 1965-1989"

SEMINAR DATES:

September 24-October 1, 2000

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

August 20, 2000

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND STIPENDS:

"The truth is that everyone today, the right as much as the left, stands on the ground of the sixties," renowned sociologist Todd Gitlin recently remarked. This seminar examines the political and cultural rifts that run through American society today by tracing the way in which the central issues of the 1960s shaped the content and imagery of the public debates since the 1970s. The course also looks at the role of conflicting interpretations of the 1960s in the politics of the 1980s. Among the topics to be addressed are race relations and the legacy of the Civil

Rights movement, the war in Vietnam, Watergate, the revival of conservative religion, the economic transformation, and the attack on the welfare state.

The stipends cover instruction, accommodations, and meals. During the seminar students are housed at the Leucorea Foundation. Transportation costs to and from Lutherstadt Wittenberg are to be paid by the students. The seminar fee for admitted students is DM 100.

The seminar is geared toward undergraduate students of history, the social sciences, and American Studies and will be conducted in English. It covers the material of an entire semester (15 sessions) within the span of one week. Students are expected to prepare in advance for the course and will receive a reading assignment of approximately 500-700 pages one month prior to the seminar. Course participants will receive undergraduate credit from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg upon completion of all seminar requirements. In order to earn university credit (Schein), participants are required to submit a research paper no later than four months after the completion of the course.
