INVITATION

At the threshold of a new millennium

Dear friends and colleagues:

In the name of the Norwegian Organising Committee, whose members are drawn from all major academic institutions of Norway, I extend a warm welcome to all who want to attend the 19th International Congress of Historical Sciences, which is going to take place in Oslo in August 2000.

It is a great pleasure and an honour to organise the last congress of the 20th century and the first of the 21st. We hope that as many scholars and students as possible will seize this opportunity to gather in the capital of Norway, to discuss recent research and to define challenges for the future of the field of history.

We feel privileged and proud to do so, inspired by the fact that Oslo celebrates its 1000th anniversary that very year. Thus, we will probably be able to offer you not only scholarly exchange and the joy of meeting fellow historians within all fields, but also an extensive program of cultural and historical events.

It is our hope that this Congress will provide a good context for summing up the state of our science and provide a pleasant point of departure for our activity in the century to come.

With best wishes,
Even Lange
President of the Norwegian Organizing Committee

WELCOME

Welcome to the millennium congress at the University of Oslo

The University of Oslo is proud to host the 19th International Congress of Historical Sciences.

The university was inaugurated in 1811. During the nearly 200 years that it has existed, it has grown into one of the largest universities in Scandinavia.

Our green campus is situated west of the city center, surrounded by the hills and the fjord of the Norwegian capital. The 8 faculties on the campus constitute a lively academic community of 42 000 people, out of which 38 000 are students.

The University of Oslo has a major national responsibility in the field of basic research and covers a broad field of subjects. Moreover, we see it as a challenge to combine academic tradition with innovation of subjects and disciplines. The combination of providing scholarly depth and dissemination of knowledge for the national and international community is our vision.

By providing comprehensive surveys of new trends and developments within various historical disciplines, we believe that the 19th International Congress of Historical Sciences will play a crucial role in the continued development of the discipline of history.

We hope as many as possible will take the opportunity to gather in the capital of Norway, and are looking forward to welcoming you at our campus!

Lucy Smith, Rector
Tor Saglie, Director

ICHS - THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF HISTORICAL SCIENCES

The International Committee of Historical Sciences was officially chartered on May 14, 1926 in Geneva. Its headquarters are located in Lausanne, with the secretariat in Paris. The ICHS brings together historians representing all specializations within the field. Since its inception, the ICHS has sought to develop the knowledge and practice of historical sciences through an approach of international cooperation. The Bureau of the ICHS is elected and partially renewed during the year when the Congress takes place

The three principal bodies of the ICHS are National Committees, Affiliated International Organisations and Internal Commissions. At a primary level, a country wishing to participate in the ICHS must form a committee made up ofrepresentatives of its historical profession. Each of these committees sends a delegate to the General Meeting. Today, ICHS has 56 national committees. The ICHS is financed by annual membership fees collected from the National Committees and Affiliated International Organisations.

At the second level, there are the Affiliated Organisations, thematically grouped, such as the International Association for Economic History and the International Association for byzantine Studies. At the present time, there are 24 Affiliated Organisations, each represented at the General Meeting by a delegate. Finally, at the third level, we find the Internal Commissions created by the International Committee itself, to reinforce and stimulate work in certain areas of research. Currently, there are 16 operating Internal Commissions.

The Norwegian Historical Association

Founded in 1869, the Norwegian Historical Association is today an organization with extensive and varied tasks serving the historical discipline and promoting the interests of historians in Norway. It aims to promote historical research, develop the teaching of history at all levels, and strengthen the position of the discipline in the public eye.
