Beschreibung des Themas / Project description

The period 1530-1630 saw important developments in the way medicine was taught in universities, in the relationship between the arts course and medicine, and in the content of courses. These developments were affected by humanist editions of Hippocrates, Galen and other classical authorities; by empirical advances; by interaction with other faculties; and by the activities of innovators working outside the domain of learned medicine proper. This course will examine important aspects of these developments from various angles: through the human beings involved in them; through their institutions of learning; through modes of transmission and diffusion of knowledge; and through the new theories and practices themselves. The interaction of ideas, institutions and individual scholars will be studied both thematically and through a representative range of academic centres. There will be an opportunity to take part in workshops which will exploit the resources of the Herzog August Bibliothek.
