Eighth Annual Interdisciplinary German Studies Conference at the University of California at Berkeley

March 11-12, 2000

The German Soldier

This conference aims to explore the various and varied meanings assigned to and experienced by the German soldier. The Medieval knight, the Prussian officer, the Wehrmacht infantryman, the peacekeeper in Kosovo-: figures of the German soldier continue to shape cultural and historical narratives both in Germany and abroad. The graduate students of the Department of German at the University of California at Berkeley invite scholars from across the disciplines to submit proposals which address the intersections between the German soldier and other socio-cultural discourses including masculinity, national identity, technology, trauma, and crimes of war.

Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to:

* Trauma and the Wounds of War
* The Theater of War
* The Literature of War and Revolution
* Technology and the Soldier's Body
* Masculinity, Homosociality, and Homosexuality
* The "Humanitarian" Warrior
* Soldier Memories/Memorializing the Soldier
* Women in Uniform
* The Home Front/Front Line
* The Good Soldier? Heroes and Villains
* "Career Men": The Professional Soldier
* Pacifism and Protest
* The Soldier in Peacetime
* Visions of War
