I would like to invite you to participate in a new initiative undertaken by the European University Institute in Florence to build up an internet-based database concerning ongoing projects in the fields of the history of police, legal institutions, criminology, and crime.
The idea for this database came about during the preparation of an international conference on the history of criminology in the summer of 1997. The need for some kind of easily accessible and more systematic collection with information on current projects became evident to Richard Wetzell, the other organizer of this conference, and myself when we received almost 100 outstanding abstracts.
Once fully set up, the database should allow everyone to track down scholarly initiatives in her/his fields of interest easily and quickly; provide short abstracts of the projects and any references to papers which have already been published; and, finally, it will also indicate the best means of contacting the director of the respective project. The areas which will be included are, specifically, those of institutional, intellectual, social, and cultural studies on crime, police, and criminology. Last but not least, the database clearly depends on the contributions you make: thus, the more information you and your colleagues provide, the better the service it will give to everyone.
