The Center for U.S. Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany) has recently assumed editorship of the American Studies Journal (ASJ), a bi-annual magazine formerly edited by the German Association for American Studies. The magazine used to be primarily geared toward high school teachers, but the Center is in the process of turning the journal into a publication that appeals to both academics and high school teachers. The journal currently has a circulation of approximately 1500.
The theme of the Winter 1999/Spring 2000 edition of the ASJ is "American Social Policy and the Welfare State." For this issue we are seeking contributions from university, college, and high school teachers. The journal features research articles, review essays, and book reviews, as well as relevant internet information and pedagogical notes.
Since the journal seeks to appeal to both university professors and high school teachers, we are keen to include both scholarly materials and essays on how to present social and welfare issues in the classroom. In addition, we are interested in first-hand accounts and primary source materials that have proven useful for pedagogical purposes.
The deadline for submissions is September 30.
