The Heimat Abroad: The Boundaries of Germanness
Krista O'Donnell, Renate Bridenthal, and Nancy Reagin, eds.
Is there a German diaspora? We are editing an anthology which considers the
Germans abroad and their ethnic identity in historical perspective, including
settlers, colonists, exiles and emigres. We would like to invite contributions
which explore some of the following themes:
-
The means by which expatriated Germans preserved or transformed German identity
against pressures to assimilate;
-
How Germans abroad defined themselves against the fluid geographic boundaries
of the German metropole/homeland, the late-forming nation, and evolving German
state and polity;
-
The ways in which Germans abroad reflected and defined Germanness for Germans
at home and influenced politics and identity in the metropole.
-
The commercial and political networks of exchange between Germans in the
homeland and abroad, the right of return, and the movement of Auslandsdeutschen
back to Germany, for example, the Heim ins Reich movement;
-
How inclusive and exclusive understandings of citizenship, nationality, and
culture defined membership in the German national community.
We particularly hope to elicit contributions on a range of geographic, topical,
and analytical standpoints, reflecting diverse understanding of what is
Germanness. Our anthology will include perspectives on Jewish-Germans and
other historic and contemporary German minorities, and also will focus on
the connections between German identity and social class, gender and race.
Those interested in contributing should submit an abstract of one page or
less describing their work to
